Any act of war aimed indiscriminately at the destruction of entire cities or of extensive areas along with their population is a crime against God and man itself. It merits unequivocal and unhesitating condemnation. (80)

Gaudium et spes [Joy and hope], 1965

On Friday, May 3, members of the ecumenical faith community will gather outside the White House at noon to pray for a speedy and just resolution to the conflict in Gaza and Israel, to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ pastoral letter, “The Challenge of Peace,“ and to remember the witness of the late Bishop Tom Gumbleton.

The approximately one hour service will include reflections from scripture, prayer, song, and the reading of an open letter from U.S. Catholics on the urgent need to end the devastation on the people of Gaza. [More details on that letter next week.]

All are welcome to participate — please spread the word.

An optional nonviolent civil disobedience action will take place in front of the White House. (In recent months. police have not been arresting folks who undertake this action, but have in the past.)

>>Please use this form to respond to let us know if you plan to be with us on May 3.

  1. Unfortunately I can’t be there because of my economic situation and my bad knees. I will pray for all.

  2. I am with you in spirit! A ceasefire is so important. The suffering Palestinians, the ones who are left, need our compassion and love. May the peace of the Nonviolent Christ be with us!
