We have heard over the past 24 hours that Bishop Walter Sullivan, former Bishop-President of Pax Christi USA, is gravely ill and does not have much time left with us. Earlier today, I received an email from Pax Christi USA Teacher of Peace Fr. John Rausch, in which he wrote: “I just talked to Bishop Sullivan in his hospital bed, and with a cheery voice, he told me he is going home tomorrow (which means to die.)” Pax Christi USA National Council member Cathy Woodson, who lives in Bishop Sullivan’s diocese, shared that he is indeed receiving hospice care.

Bishop Sullivan was the Bishop-President of Pax Christi USA when I first came on staff, and I am recalling now, most poignantly, his kindness, humor and wisdom. He has been a prophetic, courageous voice within our movement and in the Church, whether it was speaking out against torture, the death penalty, economic injustice, environmental destruction, or war. More than that, he has always embodied the very peace of Christ which he preached.

Cards can be sent to him at: Bishop Walter Sullivan, St. Mary’s Hospital, 5801 Bremo Road, Richmond, VA 23226. We will keep you posted if there is any further news in the days to come.

  1. Walter has been a true pastor and a true friend. There is none better and we are grateful to him. With love, Jo Clarke and Nancy Sabol, Erie, Pa

  2. Bishop Walter Sullivan has always been one of my heroes in a Church that needs more people like him. My prayer is that his last earthly hours be filled with peace and hope for a better world for all of us.
