Today is Dan Berrigan’s 92nd birthday! If you’re not familiar with Dan, here’s the Wikipedia page article on him with links to more. Dan is one of the truly extraordinary prophets of our time, an author, activist and poet, and a Pax Christi USA Teacher of Peace.

During the Vietnam War, I was a teen, utterly disgusted with our government. The Berrigans were my only hope and inspiration. I still have the 33 rpm records of their trial. Happy Birthday, indeed. And Many Happy Returns!

Dear Father Dan, You are such an inspiration to me and my family. I remember hearing about you and your brothers from my dear neighbor who was a teacher. Her name was Theresa (Tracy) Lorenzen. She talked about teaching the Berrigan brothers when she was pretty young. She grew up in Staples. MN and was a great friend to us, a family with 8 children who were quite poor, much due to the depression and also partly due to my Dad being alcoholic and losing his father at age of 11. Went to see the full premier showing of “Hit and Stay” at the Maryland Film Festival at the packed Charles Theater in Baltimore. You were given a raucous ovation on the announcement that the showing was taking place on your 92 birthday. The beauty of the film was the documentation of the far reaching affects of the actions you and the other 8 had the courage to take. Being from Catonsville myself, I am sure that my records were burned because I never head a peep out of the draft board when a changed my status with them after leaving the seminary. The fight however continues and a new generation must be inspired to say “NO” to injustice and violence. Much more can be said but for the moment thank you for your gracious example and leadership.

In the Fall of 1955, during my Senior Year at Brooklyn Prep, you engaged in a sustained effort to instill a sense of social consciousness in me, my classmates, and others in the student-body, by gathering groups of us at the school (now the Medgar Evers Community College), and taking us to the Jesuit Mission House in Spanish Harlem, and then leading us, with a large number of young local children, by subway to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, to spend a day away from the stress of their neighborhood. I have not forgotten those days, after more than 57 years, and I have recounted those experiences to many of the Jesuits with whom I have had contact over the intervening years, including: “Jake” Laboon, the Catholic chaplain at the Naval Academy while I was a Midshipman from June 1956 to June 1960; Gordon Bennett (now Bishop), the Principal of Loyola High School in Los Angeles, while my son was a member of the Class of 1984; Donald Monan, President of Boston College, while my son was a member of the Class of 1988; Greg Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles; Scott Santarosa, the Pastor of Dolores Mission in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles; and Greg Goethals, the current President of Loyola High School of Los Angeles.
We spoke briefly when you were in Los Angeles several years ago to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Catholic Worker Soup Kitchen in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles, and you were at the Newman Center of the University of Southern California, and I am pleased to know that you are still engaged in the promotion of Peace and Justice.
