Have you ever asked yourself any of these questions:

  • Is the journey worth it?
  • Is this what God wants me to do?
  • Am I up to it?

And, afterwards:

  • How did it affect my life?

Jim Thomas, co-chair of the Pax Christi USA Nuclear Disarmament Working Group, posed similar questions to himself more than 40 years ago when contemplating a walk across the United States, Europe, and then to Bethlehem to draw attention to the need for nuclear disarmament.

In 1982, with many questions still lingering, he and 19 others began the 6,700 mile pilgrimage. His recently published memoir, Atomic Pilgrim: How Walking Thousands of Miles for Peace Led to Uncovering Some of America’s Darkest Nuclear Secrets, relates both the personal and communal experience of this witness, and shares how experience influenced his future commitment to discover the truth about radiation exposure from the Hanford site in his home state of Washington.

This autumn, join with other Pax Christi USA members for a four-week program to discuss Atomic Pilgrim, and consider your own journey as you read Jim’s book.

After reading Jim Thomas’ memoir, Pax Christi USA Executive Director Charlene Howard wrote: “Atomic Pilgrim is both a journey of public witness but also one of examination of the soul…Inspiring. Informative. Impactful.”
