On May 9, Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka was abducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents outside an ICE detention facility, a shocking and disturbing incident. ICE has no authority over US citizens, but we know that ICE has been wrongfully targeting, detaining and even deporting US citizens and legal residents. The potential for abuse with an extrajudicial agency such as ICE, particularly in the hands of a government trending further and further toward authoritarianism, is significant.
The time to act to protect our neighbors is now.
