As part of the inter-generational focus for the 50th anniversary of Pax Christi USA, Ryan Di Corpo and Isaac Chandler have organized a series of video interviews with past recipients of the annual Pax Christi USA Teacher of Peace award.
The fifth video is with Sr. Helen Prejean, Pax Christi USA’s 1996 Teacher of Peace.
It’s hard to believe that Sr. Helen needs an introduction — a Sister of St. Joseph of Medaille, Sr. Helen gained international prominence in the early 1990s with her first book, Dead Man Walking, an extraordinarily moving and profound recounting of her work with men on death row in Louisiana. A consistent advocate for justice for those who are impoverished or marginalized, she has never stopped fighting to end the use of the death penalty.
With her typical humor and warmth, Sr. Helen shared with Isaac and Ryan stories about encouraging Pope John Paul II to preach more forcefully against the death penalty, lessons from her first book editor, and how prayer is so necessary to keep us focused and clear.
