Excerpt from the first Sunday of Advent, November 29:

“…This is the quiet work of Advent, not a frantic anticipation, but a steady awakening, a training of our attention, a deepening of our capacity to love. Advent rekindles in us that sense of watching and waiting wherein we see and identify Christ’s constant emergence in our daily existence.

“We want to become persons who recognize Christ when Christ comes and who is ready at that very moment to notice grace in places where others see only conflict.

“We want to invite people to turn away from the passivity of Advent to a more active nurturing of the heart, attending to others, and action for incarnating the reign of God. Nonviolence is not only what we do, it is how we are in the world. It is a worldview, a way we receive and filter the world, and a way we perceive and respond to the world. It is sacramental. It asks us to recognize the dignity of every person, detect the early signs of harm, intervene with care before wounds deepen, and become a disciplined awareness that interrupts cycles of violence.”
