Pax Christi USA is excited to announce a special opportunity for our members to register for the course “Living the Gospels with Rev. Dr. King and Dr. Sr. Thea” (AAMX 922.02), which starts on Feb. 5, 2024 and is offered by Loyola Marymount University as part of their Certificate Program in Contemporary Black Catholic Spirituality. The class is being taught by Pax Christi USA member Michael Howard.
The course will analyze several aspects of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s lived faith experience and speeches while simultaneously reflecting on the spirituality and unwavering faith of the Servant of God, Sr. Dr. Thea Bowman. Incorporating videos, reflection papers, Zoom meetings, journaling, discussion board, and the gospels, participants will explore how through the spirituals and storytelling, Dr. King and Sr. Dr. Thea were able to accompany, encourage, and actualize hope for liberation and social justice for the beloved community regardless of culture or faith tradition. These individuals’ wise sayings will enhance and inspire our evangelization efforts for today’s Church.
Mr. Howard received his M.A. in Church Ministry/Spirituality at St. Mary’s University Seminary, Ecumenical School of Theology, and holds a B.A. in Biblical Studies at Washington Bible College. In 2022, the Loyola Marymount University Center for Religion and Spirituality (CRS) awarded Mr. Howard the CRS Program Development Fellowship to develop continuing education programming focused on the concerns of Black Catholics; he is the Lead Faculty and Course Designer for the CRS program, “The Presence of Black Catholics in the Church Today and Tomorrow”. Mr. Howard also facilitates and teaches online courses for the University of Dayton and McGrath Institute STEP Online program for Notre Dame. He loves the spiritual readings of Henri J. M. Nouwen and the mystic Howard Thurman. He is also the founder of Eat the Scroll Ministry, where he began his search and hunger to read and study God’s Word for faith formation with adults. “Eat the Scroll….It is sweet as honey.”
The course is typically $380, but Pax Christi USA is working with LMU to make the course available for $40 for our members. Space is limited, so registration is being offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
