There is currently a national emergency in the US, but it is not at the border…it is in the executive order that has just come from the White House. Through this executive order desperate women, children, and men fleeing violence, fear, and hatred in their home countries continue to be demonized and slandered by the president. This galvanization of fear among U.S. citizens and the allocation of billions of dollars to build a wall to keep out people who have been forced to migrate to the U.S. is as spiritually toxic as it is irrational.
Eight billion dollars could contribute greatly to programs of aid and creating systems that ensure the health and well-being of U.S. citizens as well as migrants. Clearly, the well-being of humans is not the priority of President Trump as he continues to scapegoat migrants and feed the narrative that immigrants are the reason for any political or economic issues in the U.S.
“The declaration of an emergency by President Trump in order to move forward with building a border wall does not reflect the values of compassion, justice, and protection of vulnerable people upon which this country was founded,” Sr. Patricia Chappell, Executive Director of Pax Christi USA said.
We continue to call on Catholic social teaching, and the Gospel message to give us hearts and inspire policies that welcome and unite rather than scapegoat and separate, for fear and separation only lead to injustice and war. “A country’s regulation of borders and control of immigration must be governed by concern for all people and by mercy and justice. A nation may not simply decide that it wants to provide for its own people and no others. A sincere commitment to the needs of all must prevail” (Resource by Fr. Thomas Betz, OFC).

Our prayers must be to find a way to stop the illegal and immoral actions of the president.
I posted this on Facebook in hopes that people will read with an open mind and heart as I prefaced the post. I really don’t understand why so many-including Catholics-support the President and building a wall.
The real national emergency is the continued scapegoating of minorities and the President and his “advisors”!
It is about money. Too many Americans fear lowering their standard of living by sharing their dollars with the poor. We have a moral obligation to help migrants.
Misinformation and scapegoating of immigrants by the “white house” must stop. It is creating an environment of fear and violence. Regardless of ones beliefs real facts must must inforn us.

“Give me you tired, your poor..” must ring true again. America is God’s land. We don’t own it. If we have billions for a fence then we are rich enough to feed the world. By refusing to allow immigrants to come to our land we are depriving ourselves of the “real riches” these immigrants have to offer us. Perhaps they can teach us how to love our neighbor again.

We must continue to speak out against racism, xenophobia, and the abuse of families, separating children as they try to enter this country to find peace and hope for themselves and their children’s future. This is not what who we are as Americans and people of faith. We do not live in fears and as a nation we need to be a welcoming democracy.
We are called to love one another! We are all children of God and brothers and sisters to each other!
What is forgotten is a long history of unjust American foreign policy in these countries from which people are fleeing!!! What we have helped create in these countries by our manipulations is economic hopelessness, which creates despair, which leads to crime and violence. We must help these countries build themselves back up again. If the country propsperscandcthe people have hope the problems of mass immigration would cease. Let’s do what we did for Europe after the wars which devestated the countries of Europe. The idea that took root was the Marshall plan. By restoring Europe everyone profited. Not just those particular countries but all of us!!! We need a ‘Marshall Plan’ for Central and South America!!!!! The ‘billions of dollars’would be a great start.
And another thing let’s look at the real reasons people in our own country are impoverished and running out of hope. Let’s put the focus where it belongs, not on immigrants, which is where our president wants to put it, but rather on an economic system that favors corporation profit over citizen’s best interests. And makes it almost impossible for everyone to sit at the table and have enough to live healthy, happy, and holy. Blessings, Kate
