Pax Christi USA has signed onto this effort.
Pope Francis will visit the United States this September and will address the U.S. Congress. We are writing you on behalf of the World Meeting of Families (WMOF) Hunger and Homelessness Committee as we prepare for the Pope’s presence in Philadelphia by focusing attention on the struggles of our fellow citizens who struggle with poverty.
Given the Pope’s passionate and persistent call for compassion and social justice, we believe this is a powerful opportunity to promote a national public policy agenda focused on poverty. Our committee and national allies have developed this statement, “A Time for Mercy and Justice: Pope Francis and the Pursuit of the Common Good in the United States.” We plan to send this statement to Congress and to the President, as an opening step in a “Mercy and Justice” agenda the week of June 15.
We invite you to take action by:
- Using this statement as a template and sending a similar letter to your elected officials, via the www.mercyandjustice.org website.
- Throughout the summer, write and submit op-eds and use various traditional and social media platforms (your Twitter account, Facebook, etc) to further promote the message, using segments of the letter as departure points.
More action opportunities will be available later in the summer.
