This year, eleven individuals were nominated to receive the Pax Christi USA 20123 Teacher of Peace Award.

Each year, Pax Christi USA honors an outstanding peacemaker in the tradition of Sr. Thea Bowman, Cesar Chávez, Dorothy Day, and Pope Paul VI. This award recognizes women and men whose lives and work exemplify the theme of Pope Paul VI’s World Day of Peace message, “To reach peace, teach peace.”

“Each nominee has a compelling story and long history of working for peace and justice,” stated Cathy Crosby, Pax Christi USA National Council member and chair of the Teacher of Peace nominations committee.  “It was a most difficult task to choose only one name to receive this year’s award. The work of all our nominees among the varied peoples and places in our country is of vital importance as we labor to heal our broken world, following the life and passion of Jesus.”

Next week, the 2013 Pax Christi USA Teacher of Peace will be announced. This year’s recipient will receive the award at Pax Christi USA’s annual Momentum event to be held in Washington, D.C. in September 2013.

Following is a list of this year’s nominees:

  • Sr. Jan Gregorcich, SSND

Pax Christi USA congratulates each of the nominees and gives thanks for their work on behalf of peace with justice.

  1. Haven’t some of these received this award previously, namely John Dear and Megan McKenna?

    1. Thanks Lee. No, Megan and John have not been named Teachers of Peace. Both have been named Ambassadors of Peace, which is not an award but a designation.

  2. They are all very worthy people. This is a case of having to make an almost impossible decision.

  3. I nominate Rosemarie for the Teacher of Peace Award for her many years of integrity and justice in the work of peace. Marianne Sheehan

  4. Mary Meg McCarthy is your quintessential, indefatigable crusading pro bono lawyer bringing peace to vulnerable immigrants and refugees in need of immigration relief. She brings resplendent hope to those in despair for their lives.
