Webinar: Lawfare and legal attacks in the Philippines
February 26 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm EST
Sponsored by the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP)
On December 8, United Methodist Rev. Glofie Baluntong was acquitted of trumped-up murder charges brought against in 2021. Her work and support of human rights groups and indigenous peoples opposing destructive mining and logging projects in Mindoro made her a target of the military. The weaponization of the Philippine legal system against activists, peace consultants, church leaders, and land defenders is an on-going practice from previous President Duterte until today under the Marcos Jr. administration.
Rev. Baluntong had been working in Mindoro where, on January 1, the AFP launched an indiscriminate bombing attack on Abra De Ilog. These are not isolated incidents. Marcos Jr. tries to present his administration as “clean” compared to that of Rodrigo Duterte, now awaiting trial in International Criminal Court for human rights abuses, but the continued repression of activists and members of civil society show his true nature.
Join ICHRP on Feb. 26 at 5 PM Pacific, 8 PM Eastern, to discuss the practice of lawfare and the role of faith communities in the pursuit of justice and defense of human rights in The Philippines.
