Way of the Cross

Traditionally, many Pax Christi USA local groups plan and stage a “Way of the Cross” event on Good Friday, connecting the sufferings of Christ during his passion with the suffering of our brothers and sisters at the hands of violence, greed, poverty, sickness and war. Below are resources for groups interested in undertaking a Way of the Cross in their community on Good Friday. Also please let us know if you have a Way of the Cross planned in your community. We will list below the names of groups, with contact information, which will be staging a Way of the Cross this year.

Good Friday Way of the Cross Events and Other Observances, 2016

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

  • WASHINGTON, D.C.: Holy Thursday and Good Friday Faith and Resistance Retreat and Witness, March 24 @ 1:30 PM through Good Friday, March 25, 2016 @ 1:00 PM. As we enter into Holy Week to commemorate the Last Supper, arrest, torture, trial and crucifixion of Jesus, please join in a time of prayer, community building and acts of nonviolent resistance focusing on the theme: “PUT AWAY THE SWORD” (Matthew: 26:52). We will also be remembering in a special way Archbishop Oscar Romero, as March 24th marks the 36th anniversary of his martyrdom. St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church (Auditorium), 1525 Newton St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20010 (corner of 16th St. and Newton).   • WASHINGTON, D.C.: For over 20 years, we have gathered on Good Friday to commemorate the passion of Christ through a Way of the Cross among D.C. institutions. The observance of Christ’s passion is an opportunity to reflect on the ways we have broken our covenant with God at the expense of other persons and creation. In the suffering of the earth and its creatures, we have crucified Divinity in our midst. At each station we will focus on a different economic or ecological challenge or sign of hope for our times. Persons of all faiths are welcome.The procession normally takes a little over two hours. GEORGIA

  • ATLANTA: The Archdiocese of Atlanta is again sponsoring the urban stations of the cross. Pax Christi members in the Atlanta area will once again be participating in these stations. Here is the information:
  • AUGUSTA: March 25, 2016; 10:00 a.m. Gather at Burns Memorial United Methodist Church, 2372 Lumpkin Road. Walk is about 1½ miles, stopping at Ascension Lutheran and Hillcrest Baptist Churches and ending at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2607 Lumpkin Rd. 12 Noon Conclude with Stations of the Cross (Optional). Transportation will be provided for those unable to make the walk.

INDIANA

  • INDIANAPOLIS: Way of the Cross on Good Friday around the downtown Monument Circle.

MARYLAND

  • BALTIMORE: Pax Christi Baltimore will present its 30th annual outdoor Station of the Cross for Justice and Peace in downtown Baltimore. The Stations procession will start at Noon at City Hall, and the procession will stop at various sites in the downtown area. A mini-prayer service will be held at each site, linking it to a traditional Station of the Cross. Among the issues the procession will highlight and pray about are: death penalty, health care, human trafficking, genocide, homelessness, and wars around the world. The procession will take two hours, returning to City Hall.

MICHIGAN

  • ADRIAN: Good Friday Walk of Compassion, Adrian, Michigan, March 25th 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Sponsored by the Lenawee Interfaith Alliance and the Adrian Dominican Sisters. For more than 20 years people of faith have walked the streets of Adrian, Michigan on Good Friday to show our solidarity with people in need. We read the story of Jesus’s suffering and cru cifixion, meditate on the meaning of his Passion in today’s world and pray for guidance and wisdom in reaching out to others. May our prayers knit us together in love and commitment. May our meditations bring into clearer focus great needs that beg to be addressed with God’s creativity and justice. May our steps reflect the ways in which we are called to walk in compassion with our brothers and sisters in our community and throughout the world.

MINNESOTA

  • ROCHESTER: Way of the Cross for Justice, March 25, 7:00-8:00pm. Preregistration required by March 20. The Way of the Cross for Justice invites us to join together in order to nonviolently resist the injustices of our times: wars, torture, imprisonment, immigration, homelessness, poverty, lack of health care, hunger, food distribution and lack of human rights. Come spend an hour recalling Jesus’ road to Calvary and unite with the justice struggles of our day. Location: Assisi Heights Spirituality Center. MISSOURI

  • KANSAS CITY: March 25th at 2pm we will take part in the Good Friday Way of the Cross: Kansas City’s annual reflection on the modern-day suffering of the Body of Christ. Holy Family Catholic Worker House will be hosting this year’s Good Friday Way of the Cross procession through downtown Kansas City. Join us in this annual tradition as we keep vigil with Jesus and the suffering people of our city this Good Friday. We will walk prayerfully through the downtown area, pausing at a number of significant sites to reflect on the Passion of Jesus and injustice in our contemporary society. The walk begins and ends at Ilus Davis Park (11th & Oak).

NEW JERSEY

  • NEWARK: Once again, the Newark Archdiocesan Immigration Task Force, with NJ Pax Christi, Faith NJ, First Friends of NJ & NY& Wind of the Spirit will be sponsoring a Way of the Cross for Immigrant Justice and For All, beginning at 10:00 am at the Immigrant Building, 970 Broad St., Newark and ending by 1:00 pm at the Basilica Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

NEW YORK

PENNSYLVANIA

  • HARRISBURG: Pax Christi Harrisburg will hold its annual Interfaith Walking Way of the Cross in downtown Harrisburg on Good Friday, March 25 at 10 a.m. Participants gather at 9:45 a.m. at Front & Market Streets (Dauphin County Courthouse). This event connects Jesus’ journey to the cross with current issues of peace and justice. The walk lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours, will occur rain or shine and ends at Front & State Streets. VIRGINIA

  • RICHMOND: Good Friday Stations on Church Hill – On March 25, Good Friday, Christians from our city will once again gather for prayer on the streets of Church Hill. As we remember the events that led to Jesus’ suffering and death, we also remember his life and ministry. We will pray for our city and our world, that we might follow Jesus’ way of forgiveness and nonviolence. Our theme this year is “A Year of Mercy – The Beatitudes” The walk covers 2 1/2 miles, starting at Patrick Henry Park (24th and Broad) at 11:45 am, and ending across the street in the graveyard at St. John’s Church by 3 pm. WISCONSIN

  • MADISON: Good Friday Walk for Justice and Mercy to be held in Madison. On Friday, March 25, all will gather at 4:30 p.m. at Cathedral Place, near the corner of West Washington Ave. and S. Henry St., to commence a one-hour, one-mile loop walk to 10 locations, including the Dane County Jail and the State Capitol.

La Crosse, WI: The Franciscan Spirituality Center is holding its annual Social Justice Stations of the Cross walk on Good Friday, April 18, 2014, at 10 a.m. We will gather at the Center and walk two miles through the downtown to the Mississippi River. The walk is silent except for prayer at the 10 stations along the way, where we will reflect on suffering in our community and world today.
