Special Sheridan Circle ceremony on the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile
September 23 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm EDT
IN PERSON
The Embassy of Chile and the Institute for Policy Studies invite you to attend a special ceremony at Sheridan Circle, including an address by Chilean President Gabriel Boric, to mark the 50th anniversary of the military coup that toppled democratically elected President Salvador Allende in 1973. We will celebrate 50 years of international solidarity for democracy and human rights. Rep. Jamie Raskin (Maryland) and other speakers will participate.
The program will take place outdoors at Sheridan Circle, 23rd and Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC. This is the site of the 1976 assassination of former Chilean ambassador Orlando Letelier and his Institute for Policy Studies colleague Ronni Karpen Moffitt by agents of the Pinochet dictatorship. Letelier, an Allende cabinet member and former Chilean ambassador to the United States, had become one of the most outspoken critics of the Pinochet regime. Moffitt was a 25-year-old IPS development associate. The pursuit of justice for their murders has been a symbol of hope for victims of tyranny everywhere. Members of Congress and special speakers TBA.
Co-hosted by: Washington Office on Latin America, Latin America Working Group Education Fund, Center for Economic and Policy Research, Inter-American Dialogue, and Pax Christi International.
