Pax Christi USA and Bridgefolk* are co-sponsoring this online presentation by Br. Denys Janiga, OSB, who will talk about the relationship between war, ecology, and society, with a focus on technology.
Tuesday, October 8, 8-9:30 PM Eastern on Zoom. Use this link to register.
Br. Denys will discuss some of the recent technologies being deployed in modern conflicts, including Ukraine and Russia, Gaza and Israel, and Azerbaijan and Armenia. This will then move into a discussion of the notion of a technocratic paradigm, which Pope Francis has critiqued in his encyclical Laudato Si. Building on this, Br. Denys will use the work of Hartmut Rosa to better understand the temporal dimension of modern societies that he refers to as acceleration. The presentation will conclude with a Benedictine response through the vow of stability and contemplation.
After working as a program development assistant for the Environmental Studies program at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU), Br. Denys has recently joined the university’s Campus Ministry staff. A member of Saint John’s Abbey, he is also a student in the Saint John’s School of Theology.
You will be sent a Zoom link the day of the event from Michelle Sherman.
Bridgefolk is a grassroots movement of Mennonites and Roman Catholics who, through baptism, share the calling of the One who prayed that his followers be one. Proceeding through friendship, we come together with humility and courage to celebrate each other’s traditions, explore each other’s practices, and enrich one another’s contributions to the mission of Christ’s Church. We share our Mennonite and Roman Catholic traditions through worship, dialogue, and action in our common commitment to practices of discipleship, prayer, and Gospel nonviolence, while recognizing our distinct understandings of ordinances and sacraments. Led by the Spirit, we seek sacred spaces to forge new and shared practices of common life, longing for full communion at the Lord’s Table.
