Pax Christi USA encourages our members, partners and friends to sign up for a webinar in celebration of a new Pax Christi International publication Between Covid-19 and Extractivist Policies: Impacts, Challenges, and Alternatives to resisting communities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Distinguished speakers will share ways communities affected by resource extraction have responded with resilience to the pandemic. We will discuss (post-) COVID-19 responses that can benefit communities in Latin America and the Caribbean, including environmental justice, eco-spirituality and advocacy. Speakers include:

  • Leonardo Boff, Brazilian theologian and priest. At 82, he is still active in poor communities, helping people find a vision that encompasses social justice, human spirituality, and integral ecology into liberation theology. With more than 70 books written, Leonardo Boff is close to Pope Francis, who reflected many of his ideas relating to ecology in Laudato Si’ .
  • Yolanda Flores, Aymara from Yunguyo, Puno (Peru), representing a Latin American Indigenous community who will talk about extractivism in the (Post-) COVID-19 era, their resistance work in this context and what responses are needed, both nationally and internationally.
  • Francisco Calí Tzay, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Moisés Divas, Indigenous Xinka leader and Director of the Diocesan Committee in Defense of Nature – CODIDENA, Guatemala, on Environmental Justice, case regarding Minera El Escobal with Tahoe Resources.

The webinar will launch and discuss the new Pax Christi International publication Between Covid-19 and Extractivist Policies: Impacts, Challenges,and Alternatives to resisting communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
