Since the U.S. presidential administration is placing the blame for our faulty immigration system and lack of a pathway to citizenship on Mexico, Central America, and immigrants and refugees themselves, injustice and division are being created in Central America.
Injustices include:
- Pressuring Mexico to be a “Safe Third Country,” in an attempt to prevent asylum seekers from seeking refuge in the U.S.
- Funding Central American governments to criminalize migration
- Pitting Central American citizens against one another
- Blaming migrants of neighboring countries for violence
About these injustices, people of Central America said in the statement, “It’s Not Just Migrants, It’s the Sovereignty and Fraternity of the Central American Peoples” that “The wall is being build in our own countries.”
Pax Christi USA does not support these far-reaching consequences of an unjust immigration system and so we sign on to this statement.
