Dear members and supporters of Pax Christi USA,

I am delighted to announce that the search for a new executive director has concluded. The National Council has appointed Johnny Zokovitch to lead our movement for peace with justice into the future.

Pope Francis said in a morning homily once, “These two criteria are like the pillars of true love: deeds, and the gift of self.” Johnny’s commitment to Pax Christi is true love, manifest in the many deeds and deep gift of self he has given to this movement for nearly three decades.

Johnny most recently served as Pax Christi International’s Senior Communications Officer. From 2001-2016, he served on the staff of Pax Christi USA in various capacities, including as the Director of National Field Operations. He is well-versed in organizing, fundraising, communications, and advocacy. But beyond being qualified, it was Johnny’s passion for Pax Christi USA and his commitment to the anti-racist movement’s future which stood out to the interview team. Just speaking with Johnny left us energized to seek peace and pursue it. Here is Johnny in his own words:

“Having first come to Pax Christi USA as a young adult thirty years ago, I am grateful to have been shaped by this extraordinary movement and have a deep appreciation and love for Pax Christi USA. I believe that the message and witness of Pax Christi USA — lived out concretely by our members and groups at the grassroots — is one that resonates with people everywhere who long for a world shaped by compassion, justice, mercy, and love. Building relationships, practicing community and embodying those values in deep and meaningful ways in everyday life — especially in contrast to the powers that stoke fear and promote division — this is how we are going to nurture and grow our movement and change our world.”

I know soon you will find in Johnny a valuable and inspiring partner in the work of building peace with justice when he begins in mid-September. In the meantime, you can read Catholic News Service’s full interview with Johnny by clicking here.

I would like to thank the National Council, members of the search committee, and the staff, especially Interim Director Sr. Anne-Louise Nadeau, for the many hours they committed to making this transition successful.

Finally, thank you for the many ways in which your ongoing support enlivens and sustains Pax Christi USA. If you have any questions or comments for the National Council, please feel free to email me at contact@robertgshine.com.

In Christ’s peace,

Robert Shine
National Council Chair

  4. Congratulations to Johnny! I met Johnny years ago in Gainesville at the Catholic Worker House. Our youth group would come up on the weekends for a retreat and to serve/feed the poor. Johnny has always been an inspiration for me and others!

    1. Yes, I met Johnny when participating in the Just Faith Program at St. Luke’s in Middleburg, FL. and we visited the Catholic Worker House in Gainesville and shared a meal together. Johnny gave an incredible reading of The Good Samaritan parable that I’ll always remember. He inspired me then, and continues to do so.

  5. I want to thank Sr. Patty for her years of leadership. Welcome Johnny. Many happy memories of you.
Feel my prayers as you take hold of the reins for all of us. Rose Bagley

  6. What a blessing that Pax Christi USA has chosen such a faithful, seasoned, dedicated Pax Christi USA/PC International visionary to be the new Executive Director. I can’t tell you how happy I am, having had the privilege as Pax Christi Michigan’s Coordinator, of working with Johnny for years in his numerous PCUSA leadership roles. I cannot think of a better person to have been chosen for this vital leadership work….to build on the nearly 50 years of PCUSA legacy. My warmest Congratulations to you, Johnny!

  7. I have only recently become aware of Pax Christi. I live in Southwest Florida and would like to be involved in the organization. Can you give me guidance to move in this direction?
