From Stephen Dear, People of Faith Against the Death Penalty

Troy DavisTwo weeks. That may be all Troy Davis has to live. Georgia may schedule him to be poisoned to death any day now – even though the doubts about his case remain widespread and completely unresolved.

If you have already done so, thank you so much for signing the religious letter for Troy. To endorse the letter click here: http://tinyurl.com/troyclergy

We need you to do more. Ask every single religious leader you can to sign the letter.

Don’t you agree that if we really try we can get thousands more religious leaders to sign this letter? There are 600,000 working church pastors in America today and hundreds of thousands more non-Christian clergy and retired clergy and other religious leaders. All it takes is a small fraction of them to touch the hearts and consciences of the five people who make up the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles. We know the Board’s members are active church members. They care what religious leaders have to say.

They care what you have to say.

Please forward this message to the networks of religious leaders in your life:

  • Local clergy
  • Ministerial associations
  • Church judicatories
  • Interfaith groups
  • Local, state and national groups with clergy members

Ask every single religious leader you can. Be creative. But please hurry.

Troy’s fate may be your hands. If enough religious leaders speak the board just might be moved.

Thank you for joining us in prayer and action. Again, here’s the letter: http://tinyurl.com/troyclergy

  1. With the proof not being conclusive, and stories changing, I believe it is imperative to spare this man’s life. This seems like the right thing to do for anyone.

  2. It is unconscionable to execute someone in the face of so many recanted witnesses. Spare Troy Davis life!!! The death penalty is immoral in the first place, but double so when someone might well be innocent.

  3. The Death penalty makes no sense even if someone is guilty, let alone when the guilt is questionable. Please do not murder Troy Davis!

  4. Astounding how supposedly “good” Catholics like Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia can send an innocent man to his death. What utter hypocrisy. Thankfully a Power greater than these men will render the final judgment, not only on Troy Davis’ soul, but on the souls of every judge who failed to follow the word of God in rendering their decisions.
Free this man, for God’s sake!

  5. Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?
The death penalty is an unconcionable act.

  6. I am against the death penalty. I believe it is unconscionable to execute Troy Davis who’s guilt is questionable. Please do not murder Troy Davis

  7. The death penalty does not make sense in any case, but especially in a situation where the verdict might be in doubt. Do not murder Troy Davis in our name. Thank you.

  8. Please spare Troy Davis’s life. There is proof of Troy’s innocence so the death penalty is wrong in his case. In fact it is wrong in all cases because it is immoral.

  9. Please add my name to those who say, Just Say No! to the state’s questionable use and moral bankruptcy in utilizing it’s prerogative to execute a prisoner.

  10. Spare the life of Troy Davis. We do not need one more death by execution in this country or anywhere else. Violence begets violence.

  11. Isn’t one of the 10 commandments: “Thou shalt not kill”? Especially with all the doubt that is present in this case, please free Troy!!

  12. Do not murder Troy Davis in my name. His guilt is in doubt. The death penalty is murder – who will answer for Troy’s murder???

  13. I am against the death penalty. I do not believe one can justify taking the life of Troy Davis. Please reconsider and spare his life.

  14. It’s actually murder to execute an innocent man. So if murder is the problem this should not be an issue.

  15. At each deomonstration here in Atlanta I think that the dominant culture will wake up as they hear the story of Troy Davis. As a Catholic and as a Dominican sisters I am against the death penalty. Help save him from this horrendous death.

  16. I know you on the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles are facing tremendous pressure to allow Troy Davis to be executed. Even though so many people on Death Rows around the country have been found to be innocent, and even though witnesses in Mr Davis’ cases have recanted the testimonies used to convict him, that doesn’t seem to matter to most people. Does it matter to you that you have to power to keep someone who may be innocent from being murdered by a State that does not want to be a party to such an injustice? Please let the grave doubts in this case lead you to do the hard but just act of setting aside this execution. Thank you for the work you do, and for making room for a truly just resolution of Mr. Davis’ case.
