WOMEN RELIGIOUS: Bill Moyers interviews Sr. Simone Campbell on “Moyers and Company” this week

On this week’s Moyers and Company, Bill Moyers interviews Sr. Simone Campbell of NETWORK, alongside Robert Royal of the Faith and Reason Institute. Weeks before Republican Paul Ryan was selected to run for vice president, Sister Simone – who heads NETWORK, a Catholic policy and lobbying group — hit the road to protest the so-called “Ryan budget” recently passed by the House of Representatives. She and some of her sister nuns rolled across the heartland on a bus trip designed to arouse public concern over what the Ryan plan would mean for social services in America, especially its slashing of programs for the poor. Sister Simone says his budget is inconsistent with Catholic social teaching. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops agrees.

But other Catholics say Sister Simone and the nuns have crossed a line. Robert Royal, editor in chief of The Catholic Thing and founder of the Faith & Reason Institute, believes that issues of economic inequality are being oversimplified and that the focus should be on creating a more dynamic economy for all.

It’s one of the hottest issues of this overheated summer and it’s on Moyers & Company this week (check local listings http://billmoyers.com/schedule/).

Hundreds of supporters gathered on Monday, July 2 at the United  Methodist Building next to the Supreme Court in in Washington, D.C. , to welcome and give support to “Nuns on the Bus.”  The Sisters had just completed their nine state, 15 day tour to bring attention to the work and commitment of women religious for their service and advocacy for people who are most in need. Pax Christi USA staff members in D.C. were among those who welcomed the sisters back from their tour.

In spite of intense heat, Washington, D.C.’s Catholic organizations, local and national media, as well as leaders and friends of different denominations shared prayer and support of women religious who dedicate their lives securing basic human rights for children, women, the disabled, those living on the margins of society and the elderly.  Many of the programs that fund this work are being threatened by Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wisconsin) plan to balance the national budget on the backs of people who are poor.  His strategy is to dismantle the very programs Catholic nuns and others work in that provide direct assistance to the most vulnerable citizens who need the entitlement programs the Congressman wants to de-fund.

The ‘nuns on the bus’ sisters called their listeners to challenge the Ryan budget for its immorality and to work towards supporting a faithful reform budget, one that responsibly and resourcefully increases revenue for all and not at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens.  ‘We the people’ do have a voice.

NETWORK: NUNS ON THE BUS

By Sr. Patricia Chappell, SNDdeN, Exec. Dir. – Pax Christi USA

Dear Pax Christi Members,

Sister Simone Campbell and the staff of NETWORK, a Catholic Social Justice Lobby, have organized a 2-week “Nuns on the Bus” tour going to key cities across the US to visit social service agencies and offices of Congress, sharing their opposition to the Ryan budget that passed in the House.  The U.S. Catholic Bishops have also been in opposition to the Ryan budget.  NETWORK is calling for a Faithful Budget that preserves significant funding for people struggling at the economic margins as the alternative.

The tour begins on June 17th and ends back in Washington, DC on July 2nd.  Please keep our women religious in prayer.  PCUSA encourages our membership to follow their trip on the website http://www.nunsonthebus.org and find out how to be supportive and get involved.

We are hoping that our Pax Christi Ambassadors of Peace, and our Regional and Local Coordinators will share this information with our membership.
